I can confidently say that before I graduated high school, I never imagined myself as someone who would go through sorority recruitment or who would become someone classified as a sorority girl. Those thoughts didn’t come from a place of negativity towards the Greek community, but rather from a lack of knowledge. I went to a small high school in Iowa and hardly any of the girls who graduated ahead of me went Greek when they went off to their respected universities. My mom was in a sorority in college, but she didn’t talk much about it or strongly urge me to consider going through recruitment.
Thankfully my to-be roommate for freshman year convinced me to give it a shot; she was from Omaha and knew much more about the dynamics of UNL than I did. I took her advice and said ‘Why not?!’
Since rushing and then becoming a member of Alpha Phi, I am incredibly thankful that I decided to go out on a whim. I can also say that God definitely knew that I needed to meet each and every person I have since becoming an Alpha Phi. The community I have been welcomed into is one I can’t imagine college without. I’m so grateful for the opportunities that have been presented thanks to Alpha Phi, but more importantly I’m thankful for the sisters I know I will feel at home with for the rest of my life.
